Newfoundland is a contemporary arts and music festival, taking place in a series of unknown locations, so far in Wales. A collaboration between Welsh, English and international arts & music collectives, it’s a social initiative that aims to create a crossover between the visual arts, literature, live, acoustic and electronic music – a fusion of contemporary ideas.
By building this crossover, Newfoundland aims to develop audiences for the arts within groups that may not usually access them. Seeking to exhibit the work of local and international artists in every medium, in a setting which celebrates the Welsh landscape, it is designed as an exciting and inclusive festival, showcasing the diversity of contemporary culture.
Newfoundland has run annually since 2005 as a private event, open to the members of the online communities established by its organisations. Opening the festival as a public event, our goal has been to strengthen its links with the local community, to share what we have already established, and to better it through greater participation.
The support, belief and assistance of local organisations, and organisations across Wales – from CARAD & Academi to the local authorities – has enabled NFL to open to the public, and share and broaden what we do. Thanks to all who have helped and offered support. We wish to expand once more, returning in 2009 and establishing Newfoundland as a biannual event, incorporating a wider and more inclusive network with every outing. We’ve been proud to take part in a rich and vibrant arts & music scene in Powys, connecting with events and with artists here who make the distances to the venues seem small.
We are committed to running our festival for the benefit of the localities: its businesses, artists and communities. We are interested in all and any feedback. Please see our contact page. We are a not-for-profit organisation, donating to community organisations, for details please see NFL 07 below. We wish to run our event as safely and positively as possible, consulting with neighbours and local departments in order to ensure that we add something of value to Mid Wales, causing as little hindrance as we can, and offering enjoyment to all.
Indigo Children began life as a London-based electronic music and arts collective and underground party crew. Comprised of South Africans, French, Italians, Swedish, Australians, Austrians and just about every other kind of ian, they started making events around 2003, as an outlet for their music, a place to display their art and a new way to have fun.
Since the early days the collective has changed and evolved, becoming known for hand-crafted art and decoration, family parties and, later, Welsh excursions.
The name Indigo Children was originally chosen to describe the possibilities open to us, and all new generations, for connecting with everything in the world, using the most of our understanding and talent, and evolving into something more.
Throughout, it has been the dedication, the commitment to work for love not money, the creativity, talent and good will of everyone who’s taken part, that’s allowed Indigo Children events to take place, and made them worth doing.
In recent times, relocated and risen to the surface, Indigo Children have run free nights in local pubs in Mid Wales, helped to co-ordinate the Strange But True Powys DJ Competition and generally spent time finding out how openminded and creative a place Powys can be. We’ve met friends and broadened networks and braved rain.
Thanks to the whole supermassive transglobal family.

looked nothing like this.
Despite the fact that this was our venue – one of the most beautiful places on earth – in eventuality, NFL 05 was a three day mudfest from hell, during which gale force winds ripped through the site and the organisers, who spent shifts holding the marquee down 24 hours a day, experienced what might called a ‘baptism by rain’.
Surprisingly enough, people still seemed to have fun…
One of the reasons for this was very probably the exceptional standard of music we were lucky to enjoy - with grins for the fantastic Beartrap uk – and with many thanks to the artists themselves, Rinkadink, Broken Toy, Deviant Species, Ecliptic, Hex Architects, Tehomas, and residents Carlos, woef woef, Tombalina and the rest of you.
The Good Food Group café were pillars throughout – literally. Thank you for holding on.
Bop Productions came to take part right from the beginning, bringing their beautiful artworks and organic frequencies to make the valleys smile with cups of tea. Love to you guys as always, who are a part of the Cambrian rock.
saw us diversify into a full music festival with the help of the Muddy Promotions and GrassRoots Festival team. Joining us with the very best Brazilian psy, Digital Hive brought many hands and many smiles, discovering welsh moss for the first time! Bop Productions brought their magic once again and in the woodlands and on the riverbanks, in the not-too-rainy-for-wales weather, we saw a host of live and acoustic acts take to the Muddy stage, followed by nights of fine eclectic electronica and beats.
Meetings and reconnections made it a very special Bank Holiday weekend in the beautiful Welsh mountains, wet or dry.
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere…
Secluded meadows, deep forests and lakes…
sheep, beautiful sheep…
and the.

The Big Licence
It was a scary step but it was worthwhile. With six months of organisation, sitemapping, building, painting, making phonecalls, and most importantly with the help of everyone that who up and became part of it, Newfoundland opened to the public. It was a weekend of meetings of minds and smiles, of contemporary literature, psychedelic fineart and music – live, electronic and acoustic. With a peaceful reception throughout the valley which played host to us, we did it overground and it was beautiful.
At Newfoundland 07 we were incredibly proud to host a fantastic range of artists.
